November 15: WINGS OF DESIRE (Der Himmel über Berlin; 1987) by Wim Wenders | #ArtCinemaDay

5pm | Saturday, November 15, 2025 | Alliance Française Lagos, 9 Osborne Road, Ikoyi Free Entry

For our last screening this year, we are excited to show WINGS OF DESIRE, a cult classic from German filmmaker Wim Wenders. In Wings of Desire, Wenders employs a stellar cast (including Bruno Ganz, Peter Falk, Solveig Dommartin and Otto Sander) in a grey, colourless world. The angels view the world in black and white but everything changes for one of them – Damiel, when he falls in love and longs to be human. Don’t be told what happens next!

Join us on Saturday, November 15 at Alliance Française Lagos/Mike Adenuga Centre. Screening starts at 5pm prompt (doors open at 4.30pm). Tell a friend and bring two more!

This screening is organised by Screen Out Loud and Alliance Française Lagos with support from the French Consulate in Lagos, Goethe-Institut Nigeria, the Wim Wenders Stiftung and Salaud Morrisset.

Wings of Desire is part of Wenders’ outstanding filmography which includes Paris, Texas (1984, also with French filmmaker Claire Denis as Assistant Director); Until the End of the World (1991); Lisbon Story (1994); Buena Vista Social Club (1999), and PINA (2011). Wenders, who turned 80 this year, has been recognised across top festivals like Berlin, Cannes and Venice, and has received Grammy and Academy Award nominations. He was an ambassador for the 2024 #ArtCinemaDay.

ABOUT THE FILM
WINGS OF DESIRE marked Wenders’ “homecoming” and was his first German film after eight years in America. The main characters are guardian angels—benevolent, invisible beings in trench coats—who listen to the thoughts of mortals and attempt to comfort them. One of them, Damiel (Bruno Ganz), wishes to become human after he falls in love with the beautiful trapeze artist Marion (Solveig Dommartin). Peter Falk, played by himself, helps him during his transformation, by introducing him to life’s little pleasures. The film is narrated from the perspective of the angels, who see the world in black and white. Only when Damiel becomes human does the world of color reveal itself to him. He leaves behind his old friend Cassiel (Otto Sander), who continues to be accompanied by Homer (Curt Bois), the “storyteller of humanity.” The film has achieved cult status all around the world; in 1998, it was remade under the title CITY OF ANGELS, which features Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan in the lead roles.
