For our July screening, we return to one of our favourite formats – animation. JOSEP is a multiple award-winning biopic illustrated by French cartoonist Aurel. The film documents the true story of Spanish artist, activist and writer Josep Bartolí (1910 – 1995), focusing on his time as a refugee in a French concentration camp for Republicans fleeing the Franco regime. The film also references Bartolí’s friendship with the iconic Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. In JOSEP, we also encounter les tirailleurs – French West African soldiers, some of whom would eventually be killed for mutiny in a camp in Thiaroye, Dakar in 1944.
An enthralling experience for lovers of art, history and cinema, JOSEP equally highlights the downsides of war and the effects of losing loved ones and cherished possessions to acts of violence.
